THE 32ND AMERICA'S CUP IN THE REGION OF VALENCIA
The new competition system proposed by the Defender - he who wins establishes the rules - has updated the regatta and provided it with a greater attraction. For the first time, from the year 2004 to 2007, a series of 13 regattas have been developed, called the Louis Vuitton Acts, prior to the final competition.
The 12 teams entered, the Defender and the Challengers, compete against each other in the boat against boat and fleet regatta categories and the results of these encounters make up the classification.
In April 2007 the 11 Challengers have fought it out in two Match Race Round Robins, a small tournament with two rounds in which the teams have faced each other boat against boat. The four teams that led the classification went on to the semifinals (Emirates Team New Zealand, Luna Rossa Challenge and Desafío Español 2007), which was contended as the best out of nine regattas.
Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Challenge, which beat Desafío Español 2007 (5-2) and BMW Oracle Racing (5-1), competed in the Louis Vuitton Cup final and finally, by an overwhelming 5-0, the New Zealanders took the Louis Vuitton Cup giving them the right to challenge the Swiss Defender Alinghi.
